smart space

video installation
arthur ross architecture gallery, new york city

the installation deals with two basic strategies of space: the smooth and the striated.

part 1
the configuration of the installation space is defined through the visual contouring of the walls as a moving scan-light hits the surfaces. the appearance of the scan light is simultaneous with high-frequency sound waves of a sound navigation range (sonar). through these acoustic and visual devices one can read the space. the visual and aural devices reveal a type of „striated“ space.

part 2
the second element of the installation, which is the „smooth“ element is superimposed upon the first element. the „striated“ space is penetrated by the „smooth“ space. this second element of the installation is created by two video projectors located at opposite ends of the room which projects a blue light upon two translucent panels at the center of the room. as one projector casts an intense blue light upon the screen, the opposite monitor fades, creating the sensation of a blue atmosphere which moves across the space.
