with martha schwartz, inc. the new design for the corniche assumes both the re-design of the corniche road and the densification of the urban edge. the final large-scale urban structure recommendation is the expansion of the water’s edge into a naturalized ”eco-zone” to recreate the water’s edge as a more habitable edge for both man and beast.
the proposed central park / parliament and the pleasure islands have been established as an axis along which these new, major urban structures are oriented. this axis is oriented toward mecca, symbolizing the intersection between a modern, democratic state routed within a strong tradition and respect for religion. the promenade edge is conceived as an expanded system that links the city to the water, encouraging people to explore and experience a more complex and enriched environment. the new promenade is conceived as a series of 4 concentric ”C”s, linked together at nodal points. |
