the project picks up the theme of „city redevelopment“ and carries it further to a country. the structural change takes place not only within the redevelopment of a place, but between places: „city exchange“.

change of structure equals change of culture. the project „city exchange“ suggests the translocation of a group of highrise buildings in duisburg hochheide (industrial zone ruhr valley) to the bay of the city of flensburg (north germany, baltic sea).

in a reverse process, the water from the bay of flensburg is inserted into duisberg hochheide. the empty footprints of these highrise buildings, is developed into a landscape of basins filled with sea water from the bay of flensburg creating salt-water biotopes, bathing areas and fish pools.

duisburg and flensburg exchange with each other. the two cities, duisburg and flensburg, complete each other by providing what the other lacks in terms of their characters and of their structural problems. this exchange illustrates the potential of these places in a exemplary way. the exchange of these two places has been predestined. the defects and positive qualities of each place, when swapped, fit so well as to improve the quality of life for both places.
