art and landscape architecture competition
schöningen, germany
with martha schwartz and wolfgang brune
the brown coal open-cast mining area schöningen will
stop its activity in the near future. after the ground water
pumps are being shut down, the excavated pit will be
filled with water over the following 60 years.
this proposal for the future development of this vast
landscape deals with its disappearance from our
perception and consciousness over large periods of
time. the specific aesthetic of the transformation becomes
readable by the introduction of new references:
- 51 landscape gates with different heights and a platform
on top are located in the pit. depending on the water
level, different platforms are accessible. other gates
are either still visible with different heights in the water
or already sunken in the depths. the pit will be completely
filled after 60 years. at this time, seven platforms
will be accesible by boat as artificial islands and 14 will
be visible as landmarks.
- a 2 km long landscape stair is crossing the pit, serving
as access point to the waterfront after the filling process
started. plateaus along the descending steps will be
used as public stages for culture and leisure activities.
